Letter #3:
i think about it all the time
I’m starting this over. Letter #3 is long overdue. I actually started writing one in December with the first snow of the year but never managed to finish it, so as my favorite meme of David Lynch says “lets try that again, but this time good”.
In October I turned 35 which is the age I told myself I would really think about (make a decision on) if I wanted to have kids or not. Meanwhile all my instagram feed is filled with newborns and pregnant bellies from close friends, acquaintances to full on internet strangers. This year I also listened to the full album ‘Brat' for the first time and found comfort in Charli xcx’s words. I still don’t know if I will have kids, but this is a total banger.
Recently(-ish),
I had an exhibition at one of my favorite spots in the city, Dashwood Projects, presenting the work Soft Bound. This project presents garments created through a process that merges shibari—the Japanese practice of rope bondage—with cyanotype, one of photography’s earliest printing techniques. It was very special because I had been working on this project since 2022 and I hadn’t really shown much about it anywhere prior to the show, only to close friends and the people that were actually helping me make the work.
Here are some photos of the show,
Luis Juarez wrote a text about the show that I will soon upload to my website and Arden Sklar interviewed me for Musée magazine and asked me questions regarding the process and the choices I made regarding the exhibition space / layout.
In the magazine world, my work was featured in the Fall printed issue of CN Traveler Spain, in a 3 double page spread! Such a milestone as I really love their editorial work. There was a selection of images from my archive and a text about my work written by Clara Laguna. This is one of the spreads,
And as an ode to my love for naps I created a little fashion story with Louise Galan styled by Blair Cannon for Teeth Magazine. A view of Saturday’s nap,
To keep this letter short and commemorate the work and legacy of the recently deceased and iconic photographer Martin Parr, I want to share the poster that wepresent created with Martin’s manifesto, just to have something to think about and invite everyone to make their own <3
Thank you for reading and wishing everyone health and love in these uneasy times. Until next time,
Helena
